-What is the schedule of the dance weekend? We will set up the venue Friday at 5pm and start with a potluck dinner at 5:30pm. On Saturday, Lava Meltdown goes from 8:30am until 10:30pm. It continues through Sunday beginning at 8:30am and ends at noon. We will be cleaning up and saying goodbye until about 2pm.
-What role terms will you use? We will strive to use larks and robins to keep things gender-free.
-What is your policy for dealing with harassment, creepiness, or other unwelcome behaviors on the dance floor? We have a code of conduct, and we require that everyone please read it. It is the last page on this website.
-What about food? We will help to organize Friday dinner potluck, we will provide Saturday continental breakfast and lunch, Saturday dinner is on your own, and we will provide Sunday continental breakfast and lunch.
Will there be a roster? yes, and you will have the option on how much information to share with the group.
Will there be t-shirts? As of yet, there are no plans for t-shirts, if that changes, we will let you know. If we offer them, they will be offered through a "print on demand" service. We will keep you posted. If anyone would like to submit a design for a t-shirt, please let us know.
Will there be printed name buttons? Yes!
What is the nature of the hall, flooring, and will it be decorated? The hall is a old civic organization building. The floor is a lovely wood floor and great for dancing, the hall will be decorated.
Will there be recorded music for waltzing in the breaks? Yes
How much experience do I need? We realize that most people who attend contra dance weekends are experienced. As we would love to grow the dance community and we don't want anything to inhibit people from joining us, we encourage beginners to come and we will do some workshops based on need for beginners. If I know beforehand, I can work with people in person or by Zoom to help get them up to speed. I can also work with new dancers to find dances that are local to them in order to practice. Please indicate your need on the registration form.
If you’re providing meals, what dietary restrictions can you accommodate? We can accommodate most everything with the exception of extreme food allergies.
What type of housing is available? Housing for this weekend is on your own. Lava Hot Springs has an abundance of great places to stay through Air Bnb and VRBO, as well as hotels. The best value is to rent a house and split the cost with other dancers.
What If I Don’t Have a Partner?
No problem! Many people come to the dance alone. Dancers are encouraged to dance with many different partners throughout the weekend. In fact, the easiest way to learn is to dance with someone who is more experienced than you!
Do I Need to Wear Special Clothes?
No. Dancers tend to dress informally. Most people dress casually, for ease of movement, and in anticipation of mild to vigorous exercise. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes. (Many dancers prefer smooth, leather-soled shoes that are worn for dancing only to keep the grit of the world off the dance floor.) Please refrain from wearing perfume or using heavily scented personal products.
When does registration close? Registration will close on February 26, 2025
